{"id":5098,"date":"2010-01-04T16:26:39","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T23:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/singlebarbed.com\/?p=5098"},"modified":"2010-01-05T13:03:59","modified_gmt":"2010-01-05T20:03:59","slug":"audubon-california-lectures-while-they-pass-the-humidor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/singlebarbed.com\/2010\/01\/04\/audubon-california-lectures-while-they-pass-the-humidor\/","title":{"rendered":"Audubon California lectures while they pass the humidor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It\u2019s only a blip on my radar<\/strong>, and\u00a0 few are losing sleep over a dirty little dustbowl lined with \u201cQuad\u201d tracks.<\/p>\n<p>This morning commences the Cache Creek Aggregate Producers Breakfast, where they\u2019ll be attired in top hats and too-tight vests, an abundance of hearty backslaps and thick cheroots, and some environmental pipsqueak trying to be heard over the din champagne corks and water jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, these fellows are the \u201cevil industrial complex\u201d that saw fit to drain my creek dry to fuel their <a href=\"https:\/\/singlebarbed.com\/2009\/09\/07\/wherein-we-apply-the-boots-to-her-watery-midsection\/\">\u201c13% more tomatoes grown during a third year of drought.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"Monitor a dust bowl, Mr Fat Cat\" src=\"https:\/\/singlebarbed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Biological_Monitoring.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Monitor a dust bowl, Mr Fat Cat\" width=\"439\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m being overly melodramatic &#8211; these are actually the &#8220;evil indrustrialists&#8221; that make a moonscape of the watershed, and after peeling Mother Nature&#8217;s brassiere off &#8211; they&#8217;ll donate her pock marked form to the county &#8211; thereby collecting enormous tax write off&#8217;s and engendering good feelings &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and they don\u2019t need a lecture\u00a0from\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ca.audubon.org\/\">Audubon California<\/a> (as will be featured) reminding them\u00a0of their civic responsibilities, as they&#8217;ve decided\u00a0a riparian zone dustbowl is plenty good for buzzards and rodents.<\/p>\n<p>There hasn\u2019t been any water in four months. And as the last ragtag squadrons of wild fish are coming up the Sacramento, again there\u2019ll be nothing to spawn in.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 save the little beaver pond to the left of the table groaning of pastries and sausages, whose inhabitants desperate actions dammed the last trickle to build a shrinking pond in the middle of a desert.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last couple of years I\u2019ve removed my support from our traditional conservation organizations because I believe their priorities are wrong. I understand they mean well, and are trying desperately to preserve things they cannot keep operational. It\u2019s this attempt at saving the rarified names, and fancy watersheds \u2013 while ignoring the commonplace that has me disgusted.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 and so they play the game. Today\u2019s breakfast it\u2019s Audubon California handing out conservation plaques to the guys that bulldozed a shitty little brown trickle that no one cared about.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 the salmon cared a great deal, as 50 miles of perfect pea gravel has been denied them.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll assume there\u2019s some great plan out there, where they\u2019ll trade my 50 miles of unknown for 400 yards of really prime real estate somewhere far north of me \u2013 someplace it\u2019ll take me a hundred dollars to get to \u2013 but as they lack budget to manage it affectively, I won\u2019t really want to go there.<\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s eco-bulletin will announce a major victory, acquiring the very tree that Joaquin Murrieta pizzled on while being chased by cavalry.
