Mustad is discontinuing their line of classic fly tying hooks in favor of their Signature Series.
That means the classic 94840 (std. dry fly) , 94845 (Barbless Dry), 94833 (3x fine dry), 3906B (std. nymph 1X long), 9671 (2x long), 9672 (3X long), 79580 (4x Long), 3665A (6X long), 3399A (std wet) – are out of production as of January 1st, 2009.
Cabela’s web site seems to corroborate the news as they’re listing multiple standard Mustad hooks as, “Sold out Sorry, Cannot back order.”
J. Stockard’s catalog references the same issue:
Below are our best deals on some Mustad Standard hooks that are discontinued. Most of these hook styles are being replaced by equivalent hooks with chemically sharpened points in the Signature series.
Many tiers prefer the Tiemco, Gamakatsu, and Daiichi wire and switched from the Norwegian iron many moons ago. Mustad is replacing the hooks with their “Signature series”, they’re twice the price of their standard hooks and compete directly with the Japanese product lines.
There’s no mention of the change on the Mustad web site.
Those of you still wedded to one or more of the above styles should perk up and inquire of your dealer, you may want to lay in a stash of them while they’re still available.
Then again, there’s always the “Bernie Madoff” option, slurp as many as you can and double your money on us old guys on ebay …
Thanks, Bernie..

“Dr. Fish” on Fly Anglers Online is a US sales rep for Mustad. He confirms and explains in a thread there: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthread.php?t=25511&page=2
John, is there a definitive list of the hooks being closed out? I can’t find anything that tells me (comprehensively) the models that will remain versus die…
I combed the Mustad site pretty well and nothing.
Thanks for the corroboration.
Taken From the FAOL post:
“Yes, the vast majority of the Classic fly hooks are no longer going to be made. We are instead moving these hooks into the Signature range. I will forward a chart for LadyFisher and Mr. Castwell to post which shows the Classic number and what it’s new model number is (if it is getting converted over). You will now have your favorites, but they will have been upgraded with much sharper points, smaller barbs (super easy to make barbless if desired) and better eye closures. I know it’s human nature to resist change but I ask that you keep an open mind as you lean the details.”
Keep an eye on that thread to learn the details.
Another victory for the marketeers.
I never knew the classic Mustad hooks were bad until someone told me.

I would like to know what other stores or dealears besides Cabela’s in Northern Illinois where I can purchase you “weedless treble hooks”?
I checked on line at Bass-Pro shop but they don’t show them.
Thank you, Tim Collins

You can still get them online, I don’t know if these will be replaced or not.
Dr Fish provided a mustad chart of the classic vs signature hooks in the FAOL post
the chart is in post #60 in the FAOL thread or here

Keith,
The dubbing you sent is fine. Blending with all kinds of stuff.
I just acquired some old flies tied on a hook that I would describe as a kinked bend-point. From this poor description do you know the correct terminology for that style.
Best.
Don
Do you mean Kirbed? Where the hook point is offset from the bend (and shank) typically about 5 degrees – or do you mean the old barbless Mustad hooks whose “barb” was a kink just behind the point?
