I've got another superb candidate:
http://www.iceyarns.com/eng/store/yarns_for_winter:_mohair_-_angora_-_wool/mohair_angora

This is a mix of angora rabbit and mohair - it tears apart like a dream leaving no shreds whatsoever. Because of the rabbit it's quite soft and useful on both large and small flies. At $8 per pound (400 gm) it's cheap and has a very nice warm olive as one of the base colors.

while on the grail quest for appropriate yarns to macerate into their constiuent parts i discovered ROVING...unspun fibers of all sorts and colors

this takes you out of the big box stores and into the rarified atmosphere of specialty retailers

the bemusement is almost worth the trip

once they conclude that you are not an immediate threat...treasures beyond compare will be revealed

i almost felt like marco polo

Oh man, not another thing that I have to go to the craft store for! I always feel the need to explain to the check-out lady that I'm buying the beads, organza ribbon and embroidery floss for fly tying. Now I'll have to tag on angora yarn - she'll never believe me now.

@Tworod - interesting idea, I'll do a little investigation. Liquid mixing works fine but it produces a felt when strained and dried.

I always have to run it back through the grinder to turn the felt back into loose fur. I use the liquid mixing on the large lots of fur as the grinder bowl is simply too small - works peachy.

Great post.

I have a cat with under-fur a perfect shade of Blue Dun. Poor thing almost looks like a Frernch poodle by now. Wishing we hadn't got him fixed though. I could have been the Metz of the cat-fur dubbing world.
Oh well, another dream down the tubes.

Cheers,
Steve

You are better off getting mohair locks from a grower. Much less expensive, better quality, and they offer great colors. The preferred method for a big lot of dubbing is to place your ingredients in an old liquid blender and hit one of the buttons for a second once or twice. You have to wait for the mix to dry but you can get a lot of dubbing in a short time.

Another great informative post.

I've always used rabbit dubbing. Never tried mohair or woodchuck.
