Well that's one hell of a rambling disjoint unconvincing diatribe that throws punches in every direction.

I'm guilty of many things, including whining about the obscene costs of a fly rod.

I don't see how you've made a point, but the dissenting opinion is always welcome.

make your own car much?
or for fishin: craft your own carbon and resin blank, cut your own cork from the bark of a tree, refine and extrude your own stainless steel and then tell us how much a rod is worth versus what you can make yourself and the time it takes to make it.
Oh, and forge your own hooks and weave your own line too.
Get it?
Somebody ELSE is doing the hard work for you, no matter if they're making a TFO or a Sage or an old Pfleuger.

Your anger should be at the very wealthy and the dream of middle class advancement from philosophers if you want to place it where it belongs. The last seventy years were pretty much a delusion after a nightmare and now the nightmare is coming back.
Greed, spread over the world of democracies and capitalists just went and "growed too much" while you weren't lookin'.
US industries will take it in the shorts, the whole of the "growth of capitalism" and industriousness of the US worker has been offshored to somebody and someone who will work for less and demand less and has less power consumption, let alone power within government.

Computers have replaced books, newspapers and Scrabble games at kitchen tables. Computers may be the largest cause of anything negative you can dream up.
And you want to whine about thousand dollar rods and the costs of making them.
You may be ignorant of markup and wholesale markets and the costs of marketing and keeping inventory and trying to hold down costs, and target populations, but you're sure who the problem is.

Damn straight. There's just not enough technology, materials, engineering or labor to justify anything close to what these jokers are asking for their sticks.

Knowing a bit about engineering composite structures (in applications where it really matters and made in shapes orders of magnitude more complex than a straight stick) the prices of rods are a true joke.

Amen, brother. Even though I could probably afford most of these companies' offerings, it's still impossible for me to choke down that kind of price tag. I'm proud to say that I haven't bought a new rod at full retail in over 15 years. Also, you can't overlook the fact that going out and catching fish on a 30 year-old glass Wonderrod that cost $20, used, is approximately 1000 times as sweet as doing it with this month's latest revenue genrator.

The Trout Underground is saddened to announce that KB - writer of Singlebarbed - was blown up this morning after failing to mirror-check the underside of his car before starting the vehicle, which is well-known in the area by the reek of beef jerky that follows it down the road.

One witness reported seeing two men in dark glasses and suits piling into a black suburban just after the blast, muttering something about "take that, you cheap bastard" but local authorities - seen thumbing their way through bundles of unmarked $10s and $20s - were quick to squelch rumors, saying "We believe the graphite-sheated pipe bomb which killed Mr. Singlebarbed was the result of natural causes."

The Underground will hold a brief memorial service in about twenty minutes, followed by the ritual Looting of the Dead Fisherman's Gear.
