Four inches about right? As for floating, you purists are all alike. Everyone knows crawfish don't float, they're either hiding under rocks or flying. Duh.

I've added an advance look at your next lesson, remember not to shave this time - helps with the predatory scowl.

Just so you know I was paying attention to those words of wisdom, I finally figured out the Ten Reasons Why To Fly Fish.

It took me a while to get to the point, but I think I may have decoded your type.

The Skagit (450gr) handles it fine in traditional casting, but the fly "hinges" badly due to its weight. I'm still using this line as a traditional cast - not Spey.

I don't need the fly this heavy, so I'll back off the weight by half and see how it performs.

25 turns of 2Amp lead is about 9 inches of wire..

how many grains does the big red bastard weigh? sounds like some serious chuck and duck there. How's the skagit cast handle the fly?

I've got a nice deep brown Bernat Boa color, what's the length of the Crayfish in the McCloud?

... and, how high do you want it to float?

A standard fall pattern on the California Delta was a blood red crawfish-patterned crankbait, and after seeing a few bright red crawfish spit up in the livewell, I'm pretty clear on why that's true.

I find I'm beginning to wonder what a slighly deeper "brownish" version would do on the McCloud...
