With the economy the way it is, it would not surprise me if Ebay become a primary outlet for many higher end products being discounted due to slow sales. I am always surprised how few brick and mortar stores have not fully embraced online sales as part of their business model. doing so would really expand their pool of potential buyers.

Ebay is by far the most influential site on the Internet today. But, Amazon is making up ground. fantastic article. I, as you, believe that more and more people will be looking online for bargain prices. And, I think they will get them to. I am not sure about this, but i think that some manufacturers will begin looking at auction sites like eBay as blessings. As you were saying they can dump last years product easy enough through those sites. But, the can also do anonymously, not as many questions as to their motivations.

Dude man. This is totally legit. If you wanted to take it a step further you'd open up an online shop like I did. I made close to $420k last year selling top name products like Orvis on ebay.

The real issue is the bunk stranglehold the big boys put on e-tailers. I'd be filthy rich if the dealers would sell me more gear but they want to save the little guy with the brick and mortar. Problem is... those dudes can't run a business broh! I really wish I didn't love this sport so much because there are some slow, stuffy, mutha fuggas in this industry.

KBarton, this is an excellent post. But with it you're going to start scaring you regular readers who come to hear about your offbeat pursuit of pike minnows. Keep up the good work, anyway.

Just remember I helped finance that second home in Florida, friend Boca - I work too close to your shop, and can't stay out of the damn place.

Jason - I still prefer the neoprenes, warmth is still a big plus, as is the floatation qualities. Now that summer's close I'll probably have to eyeball Boca's breathable collection - kid in a candy store, nose against glass...

I guess I'm just letting everybody down. I fish a ten year old rod and drive a fifteen year old car.

I buy a handful of flies and a new magazine once a month at our local destination shop. I also put brand new gas in the car every week or so.

Just doin' my part.

Anyway, great post. Lookin' forward to Part II.

KBarton,

Well it was a good stab but you might be missing an important point. There is not one manufacturer out there that wakes you up in the moring, helps you get your day started, checks your portfolio over a hot cup of cofee, drives you down to the fly shop and wedges 700 cripsy 100 dollar bills from your fold and makes you buy a rod because you need it. At least I haven't seen that yet.

If manufacturers and shops were in the busniness of selling you things you needed then I think its fair to say they would be out of busniess. I'm sure there are plenty of great anglers that are still fishing their IM6 rods, neoprene waders, and double taper lines that are very happy.

Last time I checked you can still go fishing with dated gear. Even if you did buy it in 2003 when you bought your favorite software.

The new technologies are there for the people that want to buy it, see the value in the progression of technology in their sport and enjoy having the latest gear. Thats not for everybody but it is less abnormal than some of the above comments.

I see both sides of the stream and don't think that one is the right way for all, however, if you look around your house, office, car and most any other place, you will be hard pressed not to see upgrades.

For those that are price conscious, there are many fine products at all price points. Good luck with finding what fits your budget.

Lots of interesting info Keith.

Lots of small business is going "south" in the good old USA today and fly fishing is just a small part of it. It's been going that way for the past 20 years.

We have sold 15 Orvis Helios rods ($700+) in the past few months (the old brick & motor way). Thank God for "Baby Boomers".

Fly shops are not looking for every fly fisher either. There are plenty of people who like to shop in a well run specialty store.

I've been at it for 43 years and am doing fine. Not rocket science, just hard work and integrity. I've got a second home in FL with a flats boat so I can't be too dumb.

Many fly shops are closing which will be good for the ones who survive these times.

Lots of ill qualified people got into this business the past 20 years. Now they are going bye bye.

People by high end fly tackle because they worked hard for a long time and now feel they deserve to have it. Do you deserve to have a $700 rod? Maybe not..............

Not everyone bought into the bad mortgage deals. Only the dumb ones did, who probably weren't fly fishers.

I have more faith in the US economy than most I guess. Keep up the good work.
