Lake Davis gets some new residents

I was only kidding about the “too-big” trout for pike to eat, it appears the Department of Fish and Game was paying attention however, as they’ve just planted 33,000 pounds of 2-4lb Eagle Lake rainbows in Lake Davis.
Actually it was the American River hatchery that pressed the issue, as the trout earmarked to restock the lake were growing too large to retain in pens.
Results of the poisoning were also published, 50,000 pounds of dead fish were recovered after the lake was treated, 6% were pike, 80% were bullheads, less than 1% were trout.
75,000 more trout will be released in the Spring, the lake will remain closed to all fishing in the interim.

No fishing? How come?

There are still traces of chemicals from the poisoning in the water, it’ll take a bit longer to have it all flush through the system.
Either that - or it’ll give the trout a chance to slurp all them chemicals, and if any humans or pike attempt to eat one, they’ll keel over, stone dead.

That’s what I figured, must be some pretty nasty stuff if they won’t even allow catch & release.
And if that is the case, would anyone really want to fish there for food in the future anyways?
